It seems less coincidental the more years in a row it happens and the more often it's paired with layoffs and the implication that you're fortunate to have a job at all.
Snarky: I know you have to use your vacation and holiday by end of year, so don't feel compelled to work during your time off just because I assigned you a new project in mid-December.
